Nutrition Labeling in for food products in Vietnam - an Update
Circular 29/2023 issued by Vietnam's Ministry of Health (MOH) requires that as of January 1, 2026, pre-packaged food products must adhere to stricter nutritional labeling requirements, comparable to Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011.
The requirements inlcude the labeling of nutritional ingredients and reference values for energy, protein, carbohydrates, fat, sodium, and sugar, and will be compulsory for all pre-packaged foods manufactured, traded, imported, and distributed in Vietnam. Specific requirements apply for beverages and processed milk with added sugar, other foods with added sugar, and saturated fats in fried food.
Tea and coffee, health supplements, alcoholic beverages as well as fresh and raw foods, processed foods without packaging and sold directly to consumers are exempted from the new labeling requirements.
EU food exporters should use the transition period to make themselves familar with the new requirements. SNB Law regularly advises the food industry on regulatory requirements in Vietnam and China.
